1. About the EVS project.
For the European volunteer service, the volunteers can choose in which of the association projects the want to participate, taking into account their motivation and interests.
The different options are:
– Planning and execution of educational, leisure and free-time activities.
– Development of boat restoration and reparation activities.
– Organisation of nautical, sailing and cultural events.
– Dissemination of the association activities.
– Gathering and elaboration of written material related to the Carthaginian lateen sail culture, tradition and history.
The maximum number of EVS volunteers admitted is 4. If they wish, they can rotate through the different responsibility áreas depending on their own necessities and interests.
The volunteers will actively participate in the events the association organises, such as regattas, sailing boat concentrations, sailing courses, excursions, workshops, photography competitions, group dynamics for young people and kids, etc., they will enjoy them as well as help in their organisation.
In the regattas and other events the volunteers will be part of the organizing team, but will also have the possibility to sail and enjoy the event. Other activities are the translation of our web page, boat reparation and the cleaning of beaches and coasts that are only accessible by boat.
Depending on their initiatives and personal learning objectives, the volunteers can design their own activities and take them to action.
The volunteers have to be aware that they will live in an intercultural setting, and probably sharing the house with others. Measures will be taken and some agreements will be made to make sure the volunteers have their individual privacy and also that common spaces are kept clean for use of others.
Thanks to the intercultural aspect, the volunteers’ cultural experiences and their different languages, the volunteers’ service allows the Friends of Lateen Sail Association to offer additional activities that increase the scope and attraction of the association, making it possible for the existing program of the association to be extended into an intercultural dimension (e.g. language animation, food parties, country based workshops).
The presence of the European volunteers themselves, contributes to the tolerance and awareness of children and adolescents towards foreign nations, and supports the very idea of the European Voluntary Service.
The volunteers can use an office, with a flexible timetable, for the development of their project. Most of the program will be executed outdoors and depending of the activity it can have a morning or afternoon schedule. It may also mean some week-end time activity.
An example of the volunteer schedule can be:
Monday to Friday mornings:
10:00 – 11:30: Spanish course.
11:30 – 14:00: Office work (planning of activities, program development, web page work, writing of manuals or documents, etc.) or outdoor work depending on the project (boat restoration, outdoor activities preparation, etc.).
Two afternoons per week:
16:00 – 19:00 outdoor activities (navigation, group activities, excursions…)
The volunteers have to take into account that most of the association events and activities take place during the weekend, and they will have to participate at least in one of them, especially if there are various taking place at the same time.
The volunteers will work a maximum of 32 hours per week. They will have 2 vacation days per month. Their incorporation will be best since the month of March, which is the period where the association begins to plan the summer activities, but the incorporation any other time is also welcome.
2. About the EVS volunteers.
The EVS volunteers will have the opportunity to:
– Learn and practice the Spanish language: the association offers the volunteers the possibility to attend private Spanish lessons adapted to their level. Those volunteers without previous knowledge of the language are also taken into account in our language program, and are offered an intensive Spanish course during the first weeks of their stay. They can also take advantage of the city’s youth department resources and get in contact with young people who would like to do a language exchange.
– Learn about Spanish culture, history, geography, gastronomy, etc.: Cartagena offers a high variety of cultural and historical activities that the association will use to organize activities with the volunteers, such as excursions and visits to monumental or important emplacements. Some of these will form part of the other association activities, but others can be enjoyed by the volunteers during their free time.
– Acquire specific knowledge: the volunteers will receive workshops and trainings orientated to increase their specific knowledge in the themes they’ll have to manage to develop their projects, like lateen sail navigation or group dynamics.
– Receive support: the volunteers will be accompanied during their whole stay by persons of the association, responsible for the volunteers’ welfare and commodity, and will be available for any urgency or situation where the volunteer may need them. They will guide and support the volunteers with the development and execution of their project. There are also other local volunteers that can show the EVS volunteers the places and activities local youth do in their free time, making the integration in the community a lot easier.
– Develop a personal experience: the activities of the association give the volunteers the opportunity to contact different social environments, most of them with economic or social difficulties, helping these groups to develop principles and capacities that can give them another opportunity. The volunteers will take part in the dynamics and educational activities, and can also live the experience of the naval construction and restoration, learning how the wood was worked in the old times. They will enter a world of history and tradition as they develop activities with the old people of the neighborhood, and will extend their cultural vision in the events the association organizes. All this is a possibility for the volunteer to learn and get a valuable personal enrichment.
– Work in a coastal and marine environment: lateen sail activities are intimately related to nature and the sea. The volunteers will be able to enjoy the Carthaginian coast, with its bays and cliffs, they will learn more about the local marine environment, its menaces and problems, as well as the actions that can be developed to save and preserve it.
3. About the EVS volunteer´s role.
The volunteers should be interested in nautical sports, outdoor activities and travelling. They will work independently in their own responsibility areas. Some of the tasks and projects may be chosen by them or adapted to their interests.
The volunteers will participate actively in the planning and execution of the new projects, and will learn how to plan and transfer their own ideas to action. The volunteers will form part of a team, and their own participation and initiative will be supported.
The volunteers will choose one of the different projects the association is working on (all of them related to the lateen sail). They will be one of the team, give ideas, show initiative, and get involved as much as they desire, always taking into account that they are volunteers. They are looked upon as contributors (team members) and will always be accompanied by the person responsible for the activity.
The volunteers will never occupy the post of a remunerated worker.
The daily and direct contact with target groups (children, adolescents, etc.) promotes the young volunteers’ social competence and capacity of teamwork.
